Happy birthday to the U.S. Air Force!  On this day 70 years ago, President Truman signed the National Security Act establishing the U.S. Air Force as an independent service, equal to the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy.  Before this time, the Air Force went through 5 designations.

  • Section, Signal Corps (1909)
  • Aviation Section, Signal Corps (1914)
  • United States Army Air Service (1918)
  • United States Army Air Corps (1926)
  • United States Army Air Forces (1941)

To commemorate its birthday, the Air Force has created a website dedicated to its 70 year history at US Air Force Birthday.

The Air Force utilizes helicopters for search and rescue missions.  The photo above shows a para-rescue man assigned to the 920th Rescue Wing, Patrick Air Force Base, FL, entering the water from an HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter during a demonstration earlier this year.
