Operating Utility Mission Equipment

This article examines utility mission equipment for “utility” operations. These operations revolve around transportation of employees, goods and equipment for a variety of industries.

Additionally, Black Hawks and utility helicopters are used to:
- Inspect pipelines and power lines
- Survey land and job sites
- Place power line poles
- Transport employees to work sites
Cargo Hook
Cargo hooks enable the helicopter to carry the external loads in utility missions. A cargo hook, mounted underneath the helicopter, enables a helicopter to carry external loads, such as a power poles and nets, using a clevis and sling attached to the cargo carrier. A Black Hawk UH-60L has a 9,000 lb. sling load cargo capacity. The Black Hawk provides alternatives on how the cargo hook is released. A pilot can release the load electronically or a crew chief can release it manually depending on circumstances.

Under-Slung Cargo Net
Cargo nets were originally designed for transferring cargo to and from ships. The name “Under-slung” cargo nets refer specifically to nets used by helicopters. Under-slung cargo nets are usually square or rectangle in shape and are essential utility mission equipment. Nets’ ropes and braids are made of a thick co-polymer or nylon material that can be treated with abrasion-resistant chemicals to increase durability. To enhance the net’s capabilities, cinch ropes, snap hooks, lanyards and hooks can extend from the corners or edges. Accessories such as lifting extension-straps, and protective pads and carrying bags are utilized depending on the load.
